About Romania
Romania is an European country located at the crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe. It is the ninth largest country in Europe by number of inhabitants and the seventh by area. Often compared to a "Latin island in a Slav sea", Romania features a unique familiar feeling in Eastern Europe: its language of a Latin origin, the Latin alphabet (quite rare in this part of Europe) and moreover the Latin temperament and friendliness of its people, who are proud to call themselves the offspring of the Roman Empire and of the Dacians. We are a warm and welcoming people, keen to learn about other cultures and share our own.
We, at Himawari, share a common interest and fascination in the Japanese culture and we want to learn as much as possible about this wonderful country and its people. We hope to find new friends and learn new things.
About Bookmarks
Romanian Traditional Costume
The Romanian traditional costume represents one of the widest and most complex areas of Romanian traditional art. It is more than a simple form of art as many and different materials and techniques come together in order to create one, rather it can be viewed as an artistic ensemble. This bookmark shows the Romanian traditional costume worn in the historic province of Vrancea.
Inherited from their Thracian and Dacian ancestors, the Romanian traditional costume has largely remained the same throughout the millennia. Adapted to environment conditions, influenced by the historic and social settings, the Romanian costume has a remarkable unity with regard to its basic elements. At the same time there is an extraordinary diversity in the zonal and regional traditional costumes, embodied in differences in ornaments, colors and accessories. This bookmark shows the Romanian traditional costume worn in the historic province of Maramures.
Monuments
Moldoviţa Monastery – is famous for its frescoes painted on the outer walls because of their colors because they are astonishingly vivid and well preserved. The predominantly yellow and blue paintings on its exterior represent recurring themes in Christian Orthodox art. It is also on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The Palace of Culture – is the main attraction point in Iasi, the Moldavian capital city (which is also the city where Himawari is based). It was built on top of an old palace that burned down and it took two decades to build. It is also the last and the most aesthetic representation of European Neo-Gothic style. The palace has 298 larger rooms and it shelters four museums and a library.
Flowers
Sunflower – the leaves and flower heads of young sunflowers follow the sun and their orientation therefore changes from east to west during the day. This may be why, in Romanian culture, the sunflower it is said to have been a princess who fell in love with the Sun. It symbolizes loyalty, continuity and generosity.
Tilia – Tilia trees play a significant motif in a number of poems written by Mihai Eminescu, Romania’s national poet. Due to their flower’s unique scent, the air becomes sweeter when the trees bloom and a special kind of honey can be enjoyed. Tilia flower tea has a pleasing taste, due to the aromatic volatile oil found in the flowers.
